Amigurumi Food Patterns — Mega Yummy Crochet Book Review
If you love amigurumi food patterns, then you'll also love Mega Yummy Crochet by Miya, published by Zakka Workshop. And the best thing about this book is that I had the privilege of helping, behind the scenes. I worked on the technical editing and chart translation from the original Japanese edition, and seeing my name printed in the back as Technical Editor made me very proud.
So this book review comes with a huge personal recommendation.
All opinions shared here are my own. Zakka Workshops sent me two copies of this book because I worked as Technical Editor for patterns and chart translations.

Best Amigurumi Food Patterns In Mega Yummy Crochet
This crochet book is bursting with colourful, squishy makes. If, like me, you're a lover of crochet food, then this book is a real winner, because the designs are so life-like. Some of my favourites include:
- Giant fast food — bright, cheerful, and perfect for adding a pop of colour to any room
- Oversized donuts — soft, squishy, and ideal as playful cushions or fun photo props.
- Chunky cupcakes — these make adorable décor pieces and are surprisingly quick to crochet.
- Ice creams with personality — each one has its own charm, and they look so cute displayed together.
- Kawaii-style fruit tarts and treats — so sweet, and guaranteed to make you smile every time you see them.
Each project is designed to be joyful, and wonderfully huggable.

Visual Style: A Feast For The Eyes
The photography is bright, playful, and full of personality. Props are cute, colours pop, and every project looks like it belongs in a cheerful stop‑motion animation.
It’s perfect for makers who love fun, colourful projects.
What Are The Amigurumi Food Patterns Like?
- Originally written for a Japanese audience, therefore the patterns in Mega Yummy Crochet will seem slightly different than traditional crochet patterns for a US audience. Each project begins with an overview of the construction steps, which can feel a little confusing, but in fact are really helpful because they contain really useful details, and everything you need to know about what you are making. The actual pattern itself comes after those steps.

- The crochet terminology is US crochet terms (see page 42), and is apparent straight away in the first pattern, because of the use of hdc (half double crochet), followed by sc (single crochet) in the second pattern.
- Yarn is held double for each project, and this is also mentioned in the construction steps for each project, so make sure to read these before picking up your crochet hook.
- The patterns are perfect for teaching amigurumi basics — increases, decreases, stuffing, shaping.
- Construction is simple enough for newer makers, but still satisfying for experienced crocheters. There are lots of helpful photos too.
- It isn't a 'learn to crochet' book, but it does contain lots of detailed step-by-step guides that you can refer to when needed, along with lots of Technique Spotlights for different patterns.

How It Compares To Other Amigurumi Books
Mega Yummy Crochet sits in a unique niche:
- More visually bold than traditional amigurumi books.
- More colourful than minimalist kawaii collections.
- More beginner-friendly than complex character-based amigurumi.
It’s a perfect entry point for anyone wanting big, expressive makes.

Who Will Love These Amigurumi Food Patterns?
- New crocheters looking to improve their basic crochet skills.
- Kids and teens.
- Makers who love kawaii style.
- Anyone wanting stash-busting, quick, joyful projects.
- Crocheters who want to learn amigurumi in a fun, low-pressure way.
“Mega Yummy Crochet is pure happiness in book form — colourful, playful, and full of squishy joy.”

Mega Yummy Crochet: FAQs
Most projects use bulky or super bulky (chunk or super chunky) yarn, but you can scale down depending on what you have in your stash. Chunkier yarns make the food extra squishy and oversized, as shown in the book, but lighter weight yarns and a smaller hook will work just as well.
