FREE Crochet Lavender Pattern
Here's what you need to crochet your lavender flower stem. Dive into your yarn stash for those tiny oddments of Purple and Green yarn, and grab your glue. You will need a few thin wooden sticks, and I find that the BBQ skewers are perfect.
Materials
- Small amounts of 4-ply yarn in two colours:
- Any shade of Purple for the lavender flower head.
- Any shade of Green for the leaves and stem.
- I used oddments of Scheepjes Catona Cotton.
- 2.5mm (US C/2) crochet hook.
- 30cm (12in) BBQ skewers, or any thin sticks.
- Note: Cut long sticks in half for the smaller flower heads.
- Wool needle for weaving in ends.
- Glue gun or fabric glue to attach flower head and leaves, and also to cover the stick with yarn.
- IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTE: Due to the use of the sticks, these are not suitable for children, and are for ornamental purposes only.
Tension
Is not critical for this project, because it doesn't matter if your flower turns out a slightly different size than given below.
Two Finished Sizes: Small Flower Head (Large Flower Head)
- With 4-ply yarn and 2.5mm (US C/2) hook: approximately 8cm (small) or 11cm (large) before attaching to stem.
- Flower head shortens to approximately 6cm (small) or 9cm (large) after fixing to the stem.

FREE CROCHET PATTERN BEGINS: LAVENDER FLOWER HEAD — US TERMS
With your chosen shade of Purple and US C/2 (2.5mm) hook, ch43 (53), then work back along this chain as follows:
Row 1:
- Skip first 2 ch (not counted as a st), 5dc into third ch from hook, lengthen loop on hook slightly, then remove hook from last stitch, insert hook in top of first of 5dc just made, replace working loop back onto hook, tighten it up, then pull it through the first dc, to make a popcorn stitch (this creates a neat pocket for the tip of the stem to sit).
- Making sure that the chain isn’t twisted, work [1sc, ch4, 1sc] in each remaining ch to the end (40 (50) petals).
- The stitches will naturally curl into a spiral as you crochet, which also helps make the petals look realistic.
- Cut yarn, then fasten off.
- Weave in ends.
LEAVES
With Green and US C/2 (2.5mm) hook, ch6, then work back along this chain as follows:
Row 1:
- [1sc, ch5, 1sc] in second ch from hook, [1sc, ch5, 1sc] in each remaining ch to the end (5 leaves).
- Cut yarn, then fasten off.
- Weave in ends.

MAKING UP
- Using yarn the same colour as your flower head, glue to tip of stick, then start wrapping the yarn really tightly around the stick, for the first 5 (7)cm (2 (2.75)in).
- Cut yarn then glue end in place. This is the top end of the stick where the flower head will sit.
- Change to stem colour, glue end in place then continue to wrap your stick tightly with Green yarn, to the end. Cut yarn then glue in place.
- Take the tip of your Lavender head, glue the tip of the stick into the little pocket created by the popcorn stitch, then making sure that the loop stitches are pointing upwards, wrap the flower head tightly around the stick. When you are happy with placement, glue end of flower head in place.
- Wrap leaves around base of Lavender head then glue in place.
