If you are looking for an easy knitted cowl pattern that is relaxing, practical and perfect for using up yarn scraps, this pattern is for you.

This deep knitted cowl is worked in the round using a fabulous technique called helix (helical) knitting. That means you can create neat single-round stripes, without unsightly jogs where you change colour. It’s simple, rhythmic and very satisfying.

It’s the kind of project you can pick up in the evening, knit a few rounds, and feel like you’ve made real progress.

Whether you want a cosy everyday layer, a special gift, or a way to work through your stash, this easy knitting cowl ticks all the boxes.

Why You’ll Love This Easy Knitted Cowl Pattern

  • It’s truly an easy knitting cowl: The stitches are simple and repetitive, so once you get going, you can relax into it.
  • Perfect for stash yarn: Each stripe uses a small amount of yarn, making it ideal for leftovers, mini skeins or advent sets.
  • No messy jogs: Helix knitting keeps your colour changes smooth and tidy.
  • You can customise it: Because it’s a deep cowl worked in the round, you can simply keep knitting until it reaches the height you love.
  • Great for gifting: Make one for yourself, then make more for friends.
  • Cosy but lightweight: The lightweight yarn creates length, without bulk, making it comfortable to wear both indoors or out.

EASY KNITTED COWL PATTERN BEGINS

  • IMPORTANT PATTERN NOTES: If you are using yarn scraps for your Contrast Colour (CC) you could create a large ball of yarn from the scraps before you begin, so that you don’t have lots of ends to weave in, and you can maintain an even tension throughout.

With 3.5mm needles and MC, cast on 180 (200) sts. Join to work in the round, taking care not to twist your stitches. Place a stitch marker for beginning of round, and slip it at the end of each round.

Rib

  • Rib Round 1 (RS): [K3, P2] to the end.
  • Repeat Round 1, a further 15 times.
  • Remove stitch marker.

Main Body of Cowl

  • Round 1: Join in CC. Drop MC then complete Round 1 in CC only, until last 3 sts of round remain (3 sts of MC remain).
  • Round 2: Drop CC. Slip last 3 sts purlwise, pick up MC (which is attached to the top stitch on your right-hand needle) then K until 3 sts remain in CC.
  • Round 3: Drop MC. Slip last 3 sts purlwise, pick up CC (which is attached to the top stitch on your right-hand needle) then K until 3 sts remain in MC.
    • NOTE: It is important to maintain your tension on the 3 slipped stitches - don't tighten them up too tightly before you start knitting with MC, otherwise they will be visibly smaller.
  • Rounds 2 and 3 form helix knitting of single-row stripes (or helical stripes).
  • For a really deep cosy cowl, Repeat Rounds 2 and 3 until approximately 210 rows have been work in helix knitting (excluding the rib), or to your chosen depth.
  • NOTE: If you prefer a shallower cowl, reduce these rows accordingly. Simply work until your cowl measure 4cm less than your desired length from cast-on edge.
    • For my rainbow stripes, I knitted each section with 14 rows before changing my CC.
    • You can mix it up as you please and knit shorter sections in each CC. OR use self-striping yarn to save weaving in ends.
  • When you are happy with length of main body, drop CC, slip last 3 sts purlwise, pick up MC and place stitch marker for beginning of round.
  • Knit 1 round in MC.

Rib

  • Continue in MC and repeat Rib Round 1, 15 times. Cast off in rib pattern.

TO FINISH

  • Weave in all ends on WS and trim.
  • Block cowl flat, to measurements given above. Leave to dry completely, before removing pins.
