Materials you need to make a star from my free crochet star pattern
- Oddments of double knitting (light worsted) yarn. Only small amounts are needed for each star (approximately 4-5g).
- US E/4 hook or UK 3.5mm
- Short lengths of ribbon that is approximately 6mm wide
- 1 small button per star
- Sewing needle and thread to sew on button and ribbon
- Yarn needle and scissors
Note that you can also use aran weight (worsted) with a 4mm/US G/6 hook or 4ply (sock yarn) with a 2.5mm/US C-2 hook, but note that this will alter the finished size compared to the measurements below.
Finished size of your crochet star
Approximately 7.5cm (3in) across, using double knitting (light worsted) yarn and 3.5mm (US E/4) hook. This will vary if different yarn/hook size is used.
Gauge/Tension
Tension is not critical for this project. Tension may differ from person to person, depending on yarn and hook size used.

Stars are worked in the round, joining each round with a slip stitch.
ABBREVIATIONS (US TERMS WITH UK TERMS IN BRACKETS)
Ch = chain; ch-sp(s) = chain space(s), US dc = US double crochet (UK tr = UK treble crochet); rep = repeat; slst = slip stitch; st(s) = stitch(es); yrh, yarn round hook; RS = right side; WS = wrong side.
Pattern repeats are indicated by [ … ] or * or ** meaning to repeat instruction within brackets or following the asterisk(s), as many times as stated.

US CROCHET TERMS
With light worsted weight yarn and US E/4 hook, ch5 then slst in the first of these 5 ch to create a small ring.
Work Round 1 into the centre of the ring.
Round 1 (RS): Ch3 (this counts as first double crochet throughout), 1dc into the ring, ch2, [2dc into the ring, ch2] 4 times, then slst in top of beginning ch3. You now have 5 groups of 2dc and 5 ch2-sps.
Round 2: Slst in next dc, slst in ch2-sp. Your hook is now in the correct place to begin Round 2. Ch3, [2dc, ch3, 3dc] in same sp, *[3dc, ch3, 3dc] in next ch2-sp*; rep from * to * 3 times more, then join with slst to top of beginning ch3. You now have 10 groups of 3dc and 5 ch3-sps.
Round 3: Slst in next 2 dc, slst in ch3-sp. Your hook is now in the correct place to begin Round 3. Ch3, [2dc, ch3, 3dc] in same sp, ch1, slst in the space between 3dc groups, ch1, **[3dc, ch3, 3dc] in next ch3-sp, ch1, slst in the space between 3dc groups, ch1**; rep from ** to ** 3 times more, then join with slst to top of beginning ch3. You now have 10 groups of 3dc, 5 ch3-sps, 10 ch1-sps, and 5 slst.
Fasten off and weave in ends, then pin flat to create five defined star points, and steam block. Leave to dry.
Cut a short length of thin ribbon to form a loop. Place ends on one point of star then sew a small button over the ends to secure the ribbon in place.
UK CROCHET TERMS
With double knitting yarn and 3.5mm hook, ch5 then slst in the first of these 5 ch to create a small ring. Work Round 1 into the centre of the ring.
