Materials
- Small amounts of 4-ply yarn in Black or Purple (or any colour of choice):
- I used oddments of Scheepjes Catona Cotton in Jet Black 110 and Delphinium 113.
- 3mm (US D/3) crochet hook.
- Extras: Wool needle; removable stitch marker; optional spray starch to stiffen your motif (this is not essential); optional seed beads for eyes with sewing needle and thread.
- NOTE: If using for a small child do not use tiny beads; instead use White thread for eyes.
Gauge or Tension
Is not critical for this project, because it doesn't matter if your spider motif turns out a slightly different size than given below.
Finished Size Of Crochet Spider Appliqué
- Approximately 4.5cm (1.8in) from tip of head to end of body, and approximately 9-10cm (3.5-4in) wide including legs, using 4-ply (fingering) yarn and a US D/3 (3mm) hook.
Top Tips for the Best Results
- Place a removable stitch marker in the last stitch of each round and move it up as you go — it's an easy way to keep track when working in a spiral.
- Remember Round 4 starts with an increase rather than ending on one, which keeps the body nicely round.
- If you're making these for a small child, skip the seed beads and use white or black thread for the eyes instead, with tiny French knots.
- A light spray of starch on WS, and pinning the appliqué flat (WS up, legs pointing forwards) while it dries will help it hold its shape beautifully.

With US D/3 (3mm) hook and chosen colour, make a magic ring (also called an adjustable ring) and work in a spiral.
Place a removable stitch marker in the last stitch of the round and move it up as you work.
- Round 1 (RS): 6sc into centre of ring. (6 sts)
- Pull yarn tail gently, to close ring.
- Round 2: 2sc in every st. (12 sts)
- Round 3: [1sc in next st, 2sc in next st] 6 times. (18 sts)
- Note that Round 4 starts with an increase, so that the Body remains a round shape.
- Round 4: [2sc in next st, 1sc in next 2 sts] 6 times. (24 sts)
FINAL BODY ROUND AND LEGS
- Round 5: Begin with the Head: 1hdc in next st, 2dc in next st, 2tr in next st, 2dc in next st, 1hdc in next st, slst in next 2 sts,
- continue with Legs, noting that the legs on each side of the body are worked sightly differently so that they all point forwards:

MAKING UP
- To add eyes: Sew 2 white seed beads to the head of the spider appliqué.
- To finish (optional): Spray the WS of the appliqué with spray starch and pin to a flat surface with WS uppermost and all legs pointing forwards. Leave to dry completely.
- No tiny seed beads, or making this for a small child? For safety, use white or black thread and make tiny French knots for the eyes instead.
