Granny Square Crochet Pattern (Free) – 12-inch Blanket Motif

Love this? Share it on Pinterest or Facebook.

My latest Granny Square Crochet Pattern is the 12-inch Framed Daisy Square, which brings together two of my all-time favourite things to crochet: a classic daisy flower and bold granny block stitch.

A bright white daisy with a peach centre sits in the middle. Alternating pattern rounds build a colourful, structured outline that makes a pretty picture frame for your flower. Each round uses only a little yarn, so it's a brilliant stash-buster for your aran-weight oddments.

You can use this gorgeous granny square crochet pattern as part of a larger piece, such as a crochet afghan or blanket, or you can make it as a stand-alone square that you can hang on a rustic twig, or use as a table mat.

Why You'll Love This Free Granny Square Crochet Pattern

  • Two favourites in one square: A pretty daisy centre framed with bold granny block stitch.
  • Stash-friendly: Each round uses only a little yarn, so it’s ideal for oddments.
  • Confidence-building: Basic stitches plus a simple cluster, with stitch counts at the end of every round so you keep on track.
  • Quick, satisfying rounds: The daisy grows fast, and the frame builds round by round, therefore it’s easy to pick up and put down.
  • Easy to resize: Add extra pattern rounds or edging rounds for a bigger square, or switch to DK for a smaller one.
  • So many uses: Use it in a sampler blanket, make a cushion from two squares, or give it as a handmade gift.

This square is a great next step if you already know the basic stitches and want to build your skills.

Granny Square Crochet Pattern: Level of Difficulty and Why

Level of Difficulty: Next steps (confident beginner), because it uses:

  • Basic stitches only: Chain, slip stitch, US single crochet, double crochet and treble crochet; UK double crochet, treble crochet; double treble crochet.
  • One special stitch: The US 3-treble cluster (UK 3-double treble cluster), which is explained in the special stitches section.
  • Repetitive rounds: Rounds 4 and 5 are repeated to the end, so you’ll quickly get into a calming rhythm.
  • Stitch counts at the end of every round: Therefore it’s easy to check if you’re on track.

What makes it a “next step” rather than total beginner:

  • Working in rounds from a magic ring (a chain ring alternative is also included).
  • Frequent colour changes, so you’ll be joining new yarn and weaving in ends regularly.
  • Corners need a little attention so that your square stays neat and straight.
  • The edging is worked into the back loops only, which may be new to some crocheters.
  • If you’ve made a basic granny square before, you’ll find this one very achievable.
