HOW TO KNIT EASTER CHICK EGG COSIES FROM MY FREE KNITTING PATTERN

MATERIALS YOU WILL NEED:

Hayfield/Sirdar Bonus Toytime DK 25g; 1 ball in each of

YARN A Sunflower (978)

YARN B Bright Orange (981)
YARN C Signal Red (977)
Short length of any Black yarn for eyes
(Note: the egg cosies only use a small amount of yarn, so you may prefer to use up oddments of any double knitting yarn in similar shades from your stash)

Pair of 2.75mm straight knitting needles
Wool needle for sewing pieces together.

ABBREVIATIONS

k = knit; k2tog = knit next 2 sts together as 1 st (to decrease 1 st); k3tog = knit next 3 sts together as 1 st (to decrease 2 sts); kfb = increase 1 st by knitting into the front of the next st, but don’t remove it from the left-hand needle. Knit into the back of the same st then remove st from left-hand needle (2 stitches made from one stitch are now on right-hand needle); p = purl; st(s) = stitch(es): st st = stocking stitch (k on right side and p on wrong side); skpo = slip 1 st, knit 1 st, pass slipped st over the knitted st; p2tog = purl next 2 sts together as 1 st (to decrease 1 st); sk2po = slip 1 st knitwise, knit 2 sts together, pass slipped st over the knit 2 together.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR FREE EGG CHICK KNITTING PATTERN

Mr. & Mrs. Chirp Egg Cosy Body
(make two pieces for each cosy)

With Yarn A and 2.75mm needles, cast on 21 sts.
Rows 1-4: [K1, p1] to the last st, k1.
Rows 5-24: Starting with a k row, st st 20 rows.
Row 25: K1, skpo, k to the last 3 sts, k2tog, k1. (19 sts)
Rows 26-28: Starting with a p row, st st 3 rows.
Row 29: Repeat Row 25. (17 sts)
Row 30: P.
Rows 31-32: Repeat Rows 29 & 30. (15 sts)
Row 33: K1, sk2po, k to the last 4 sts, k3tog, k1. (11 sts)

Cast off. Cut yarn and pull through last st. Pull tight to fasten off.

Beak (make 1 per egg cosy)

With Yarn B, cast on 8 sts (starting at the top of the beak).
Rows 1-2: Starting with a k row, st st 2 rows.
Row 3: K1, skpo, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1. (6 sts)
Rows 4-6: Starting with a p row, st st 3 rows.
Row 7: K1, skpo, k2tog, k1. (4 sts)
Row 8: K.
Row 9: [K2tog] twice. (2 sts)
Row 10: P2tog. (1 st)

Cut yarn and pull through last st. Pull tight to fasten off. Sew a horizontal line across the top of the beak in Yarn A, then sew beak to the centre of one body piece. Using the Black yarn, sew two eyes above the beak.

Next, sew the two cosy body pieces together, as follows: Either place right sides together with wrong sides facing out and use a whip stitch or back stitch. Alternatively you can place wrong sides together with right sides facing out and use mattress stitch to join. Tie off all loose yarn ends on the inside and turn cosy right way out.

Head Cone (make 1 per egg cosy)

With Yarn C and 2.75mm needles, cast on 7 sts using a two-needle cast-on method and work as follows: *Cast off until 1 st remains on right needle. Transfer this stitch back to the left needle then cast on 6 sts more, using a two-needle cast-on method (to make 7 sts on needle again); repeat from * once more. Cast off all sts. Cut yarn and pull through last st. Pull tight to fasten off. Sew cone to top of head, either front to back for Mr. Chirp or side to side for Mrs. Chirp.

Wings (for Mrs. Chirp)

With Yarn A and 2.75mm needles, cast on 12 sts.
Rows 1-2: Starting with a k row, st st 2 rows.
Row 3: K1, skpo, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1. (10 sts)
Row 4: P.
Rows 5-8: Repeat Rows 3 & 4 twice. (6 sts)
Row 9: K1, skpo, k2tog, k1. (4 sts)
Row 10: P.
Row 11: [K2tog] twice. (2 sts)
Row 12: P.
Row 13: K.
Row 14: P.
Row 15: [Kfb] twice. (4 sts)
Row 16: P.
Row 17: Kfb, k to last st, kfb. (6 sts)
Row 18: P.
Rows 19-24: Repeat rows 17 & 18 three times (12 sts)

Cast off knitwise. Fold the wing in half (so that the wrong sides are together and the right sides is facing you). Stitch the row ends together using blanket stitch and Yarn C. Next, stitch the cast-on and cast-off edges to the side of the chicken body.
