Free Hexagon Crochet Pattern

Pin for later or share with your friends

My free hexagon crochet pattern is a timeless and beautiful motif.

If you enjoy crochet projects that use up your yarn stash, the Timeless Granny Hexagon is a lovely make to add to your list. It has the familiar comfort of a classic hexagon shape, but with a softer, more delicate look. The great thing about this free hexagon crochet pattern is that you can use small amounts of leftover yarn to create a stunning mix of colours.

Hexagons are great because they are portable, they grow fast, and you can use them for almost anything. Make a single one as a coaster, or join several together for blankets, bags, cushions, cowls, table runners, and more. Once you have made a few Timeless Hexagons, you'll easily remember the pattern.

This pretty crochet motif is perfect for using up yarn stash oddments, and you can also make it in any thickness of yarn.

Free Hexagon Crochet Pattern Level of Difficulty

The Timeless Granny Hexagon is an intermediate crochet pattern. It uses a few next-level stitches, including:

  • cluster stitches, which are basically the same as US dc2tog/UK tr2tog and US dc3tog/UK tr3tog (albeit worked into the same stitch or space),
  • puff stitch,
  • a simple slip stitch join-as-you-go method.

If you’re comfortable with basic crochet stitches, and enjoy a small challenge, you’ll find this motif straightforward and enjoyable to make.

Why You'll Love My Free Hexagon Crochet Pattern

  • It looks detailed without being overly-complicated.
  • It works with any yarn weight.
  • It’s a perfect stash-buster because each motif centre uses a small amount of yarn.
  • You can make a stack of motifs in an evening, and join them as you make them.
  • It’s easy to personalise with your own colour combinations.

Yarn Stash Ideas

This motif is perfect for all those little leftovers from bigger projects. Try:

  • Using one colour per round to create a colourful look.
  • Making a set as individual coasters, in your favourite colour palette.
  • Using matching colours for a calming, modern feel.
  • Picking bold scraps for a bright patchwork effect.

If you have several small yarn cakes or mini skeins, this is a great way to use them without waste.

Tips For Using My Free Hexagon Crochet Pattern

  • Keep your tension relaxed because this will help the hexagon to sit flat.
  • Use the join-as-you-go method as instructed, for a seamless finish. This works best when the same colour is used for all joining rounds.
  • Make sure each hexagon is the same size before joining. Sometimes, tension can change over time - so if this happens, simply change your crochet hook accordingly. A smaller hook will create a smaller hexagon, whereas a larger hook will create a larger hexagon.

Important Pattern Notes

  • Pattern is written in both US and UK crochet terms. US terms are written first, followed by UK terms.
  • Make sure that you have 9 clusters in the first round and 18 puff stitches in the 3rd Round.
  • On the joining round, the ch1-sp is the small gap after the cluster stitch.
  • When working the slip stitch join, insert hook from the underneath of the joining ch-sp.
  • Weave in ends after joining each motif, because this will save a big job later on.

Materials Per Motif

4ply (sock) yarn

  • For the Centre Circle, Rounds 1-3:
    • 2g of yarn.
  • For the outside Rounds 4-5 in Main Colour:
    • 2g of yarn.
  • 3.5mm (US E/4) crochet hook.
  • Wool needle for weaving in ends.

Double knitting (light worsted) yarn

  • For the Centre Circle, Rounds 1-3:
    • 4g of yarn.
  • For the outside Rounds 4-5 in Main Colour:
    • 4g of yarn.
  • 4mm (US G/6) crochet hook.
  • Wool needle for weaving in ends.

How To Calculate Exact Amounts Of Yarn

Method 1: Measure the Yarn Directly

If you want an exact measurement without relying on the yarn label:

  1. Crochet the hexagon as normal.
  2. Undo the motif carefully.
  3. Measure the total lengths used with a tape measure. Measure the lengths used for Rounds 1-3, and the lengths used for Rounds 4-5.
  4. This gives you the true number of metres used for one motif.

This method is helpful if you’re using unlabelled scraps.

Using Your Numbers

Once you know the amount of yarn for one motif, simply multiply it by the number of hexagons you plan to make. This helps you check whether you have enough scraps, or if a certain colour will run short.

Method 2: Weigh Your Hexagon Crochet Motif

  1. Make one full hexagon.
  2. Weigh it on a small digital scale (kitchen scales works really well because they are precise).
  3. Note the weight in grams.

This method is quick and doesn’t require any maths.

Tension

Is not critical for this project, because it doesn't matter if your crochet hexagon turns out slightly smaller or larger than the finished size given below.

Finished Size

  • With 4ply (sock) yarn: Approximately 8cm (3.25in) wide from straight edge to straight edge, and 9.5cm (3.75in) across the diagonal (from corner to corner), with 3.5mm (US E/4) hook.
  • With double knitting (light worsted) yarn: Approximately 11.5cm (4.5in) wide from straight edge to straight edge, and 13.5cm (5.5in) across the diagonal (from corner to corner), with 4mm (US G/6) hook.

Instructions (US crochet terms)

First Crochet Motif only (or for an individual motif)

With US E/4 (3.5mm) hook and chosen yarn, make a magic ring. Alternatively, you can ch5 then slst in first of these chains, to form a ring. Work Round 1 into the centre of the ring.

See special stitches above for 2dcCL, 3dcCL and puff stitch instructions. See images A to D for help with stitch placement for Rounds 1 to 3.

For visual purposes and stitch definition, I have used a thicker yarn for the images with a 4mm (US G/6) hook.

Round 1: Ch2 and 1dc into ring (counts as first 2dcCL here and throughout), ch2, [2dcCL into ring, ch2] 8 times, skip first 2dcCL then slst into the first ch2-sp. (9 x 2dcCL and 9 ch2-sps)

Round 2: [Ch2, 1dc, ch2, 2dcCL] all into same ch-sp, ch2, *[2dcCL, ch2] twice into next ch2-sp; repeat from * to end, skip first 2dcCL then slst into the first ch2-sp. (18 x 2dcCL and 18 ch2-sps)

Round 3: Puff stitch into same ch2-sp, ch3, [puff stitch into next ch2-sp, ch3] to end, slst into top of first puff stitch, then fasten off. (18 puff sts and 18 ch3-sps)

Round 4:

To make it easier to follow the pattern, I have separated Round 4 into bullet points. For help with stitch placement, see images E to H below:

  • Join Main Colour with a slst to any ch3-sp,
  • 2dcCL into the top of the dcCL from 2 rounds below (from Round 2), working over the top of ch3 and trapping it into the stitches,
  • ch1, then FPsc around the top of the next puff stitch, sliding your hook under the top of the puff stitch from front, to back, to front again,
  • [2dcCL into the top of the dcCL from 2 rounds below (from Round 2), ch1, FPsc around the top of the next puff stitch] 17 times,
  • slst in top of first 2dcCL to join,
  • slst into the next ch1-sp (this is the space before the next FPsc). (18 2dcCL, 18 ch1-sps, 18 FPsc).

Round 5 (for first motif only):

To make it easier to follow the pattern, I have separated Round 5 into bullet points:

  • [Ch2, 2dcCL, ch5, 3dcCL] in same sp, [ch5, skip 2 sts then 1sc in next ch1-sp] twice, ch5, skip 2 sts,
  • *[3dcCL, ch5, 3dcCL] in next ch1-sp, [ch5, skip 2 sts then 1sc in next ch1-sp] twice, ch5, skip 2 sts; repeat from * to the end,
  • slst in top of first 2dcCL.
  • Fasten off. (6 corners of [3dcCL, ch5, 3dcCL], and along each side there are: 3 x ch5-sps and 2 sc).
  • Your first motif is complete. See instructions below on how to join subsequent motifs.

How To Join Subsequent Hexagon Motifs

To join the hexagons together you will crochet Rounds 1 to 4 exactly the same as given above. You will join motifs during Round 5, as follows:

Round 5 for subsequent motifs:

  • [Ch2, 2dcCL, ch5, 3dcCL] in same sp,
  • [ch5, skip 2 sts then 1sc in next ch1-sp] twice, ch5, [3dcCL, ch2] in next ch1-sp, slst into corner sp of joining motif, ch2, 3dcCL in same ch1-sp of working motif to complete the corner,
  • *ch2, slst in next ch5-sp on joining motif, ch2, 1sc in next ch1-sp on working motif, repeat from * once more,
  • ch2, slst in next ch5-sp on joining motif, ch2, [3dcCL, ch2] in next ch1-sp, slst into corner of joining motif, NOTE: if you are joining more sides, slst into the corner of next motif,
  • ch2, 3dcCL in same ch1-sp on working motif to complete the corner**.
  • If you have another side to join along, repeat from * to ** as many times as needed.
  • Once all the required sides are joined, you then complete Round 5 as given above for First Motif, without joining any more sides (i.e. working the 5ch in between stitches),
  • slst in top of first 2dcCL.
  • Fasten off then weave in ends.
